New Brunswick fashionables January 1834 / drawn on stone by J. W. Giles. – [18-]. – 1 photograph : b&w ; 13 x 19.5 cm. This photograph by Francis Beverley, of Fredericton, was published by the Howard Smith Paper Co., of Toronto. The original pencil sketch, which is now lost, was drawn on the spot by either Lieutenant John Campbell, the son and aide-de-camp of Sir Archibald Campbell, lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick (1831-1837), or John Giles. Displayed in Fredericton’s Queen Hotel for many years, the sketch was photographed by George Taylor about 1887. This view of Queen Street and Phoenix Square, Fredericton, N.B., shows the two-storey Tank House, in the foreground, located on the site of the present City Hall. It contained a water tank for fighting fires. The city councillors and town committee met upstairs. Beyond the Tank House is the soldiers’ stone barracks which stand today. The two-storey brick building at the right was the office of E. Drake, located at what is now the corner of Queen and York streets. Lieutenant-Governor Campbell’s horse-drawn sleigh is in the lower right-hand corner. P5-222 George Taylor fonds, PANB.
